CA22 - Devin Nunes (R) v. Andrew Janz (D)

The Democratic Challenger: Andrew Janz

Andrew Janz, the son of immigrants, was raised in the Central Valley community of Visalia. He has devoted his life to public service. A Deputy District Attorney in Fresno County, Andrew works to keep his community safe, and he is running for Congress to finally bring real representation to the 22nd District. Janz is focused on clean drinking water and better water systems for family farmers. Andrew is a friend to small businesses, and he will work to make health care more affordable.

His top issues include: Improve the Affordable Care Act, more education funding, allow federal law enforcement to do their jobs without political interference, clean water, better water storage

His website:

The Republican Incumbent: Devin Nunes

Where do we begin with Congressman Devin Nunes? There is no Member of Congress more committed to derailing the investigation of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election than Nunes. As the House Intelligence Committee Chair, he went behind the backs of his colleagues for a late-night visit to the White House to share classified information. He then claimed he was going to recuse himself and proceeded to continue interfering with the investigation, up to an including threatening the Department of Justice for cooperating. We’re sure it’s just a coincidence that he’s a close ally of Trump who served on Trump’s transition team. Nunes’ motto seems to be Trump first, Russia second, America last, and it’s our patriotic duty to do everything we can to get him out of Congress.

Congressman Nunes has consistently voted against Medicaid, yet:

  • 44% of the children in CA-22 are on Medicaid or CHIP, and
  • 21% of the adults in CA-22 are on Medicaid

Congressman Nunes has consistently voted against the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps families in need provide healthy food for children and seniors, yet:

  • 39,023 households in CA-22 receive SNAP, and 16.7% of them have a senior 60 or older in the household and 74.4% of them have a child under 18

Congressman Nunes voted dozens of times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, even though it has contributed to a substantial increase in the number of insured CA-22 residents:

  • Drop In Uninsured Rate Thanks to the Affordable Care Act in CA-22: 56.7%, from 17.1% to 7.4%
  • Number of CA-22 Residents Covered Under the ACA’s Medicaid Expansion: 82,800
  • Number of CA-22 Residents Covered Through the ACA’s Marketplace Under Covered California: 19,700

Congressman Nunes has accepted $37,450 from the NRA.

    As important as Nunes’ anti-medicaid and anti-public health care positions are, let’s not forget some of his other foolish deficiencies and policy positions which are directly contrary to District 22’s interests, including (but not limited to):

    1) Water: Nunes opined “climate change is bogus” and that California’s water problems are all government created when he fiercely opposed President Obama’s 2015 effort to create a $billion federal fund to help California address it’s water emergency — with Nunes bellowing, “we want water, not welfare”;
    2) Jobs: Nunes went to war against Department of Defense when it refused to re-locate a $billion-dollar new US intelligence intercept facility from UK to his ancestral remote Azores Islands to create new jobs there, and claimed the Pentagon purposely lied to him using bogus cost analyses that showed his suggested Azores Island location would be very costly for US taxpayers and highly ineffective — but after 7 terms in congress, Nunes has yet to create (or attempt to create) a single new job in Tulare County;
    3) Partisan politics: Nunes’ total loyalty to party was rewarded with appointment as Chairman of House Intelligence Committee by his grateful patron when John Boehner retired (although Nunes had no experience or background at all in foreign policy or intelligence community, with College of Sequoias and Cal Poly degrees in agricultural business, and apparently with no family member having ever served in US armed forces during past 100 years) — and Nunes then using this Chairmanship solely for partisan purposes of derailing Mueller investigation and attacking FBI and Department of Justice (and other Democrat and Republican members of his committee);
    4) Small Time Chisels: Nunes apparently misused what were supposed to be donated campaign funds to buy $15,000 worth of Boston Celtics tickets and for his travel to Boston and various California wineries and beachfront hotels (none of which in District 22).

    Nunes’ total disregard for District 22 interests — little of his campaign funds come from within the District — is demonstrated by Nunes’ refusal to hold ANY public meetings or town halls, and by his bizarre accusation (without providing evidence) that the Fresno Bee — which endorsed him in 6 prior elections — "has worked closely with radical left-wing groups to promote numerous fake news stories about me”, when the Bee questioned a (partly Nunes’-owned) Napa winery’s legitimate use of a corporate yacht. Even Nunes’ (many) Republican supporters cannot recall ONE thing Nunes ever actually accomplished for Tulare County during his seven terms in office. It is finally time for Nunes to buy back some cows (he sold his dairy farm interest to invest in that upscale Napa winery) — Nunes has milked Tulare County long enough.

    I’m researching SNAP participation in Calif. congressional districts and your numbers are higher than those from the Food Research & Action Center (2016 data) and the Statistical Atlas (2015). Can you footnote your data so that we can determine how timely it is?
