CA25 - Steve Knight (R) v. Katie Hill (D)

The Democratic Challenger: Katie Hill

Katie HillKatie Hill was born and raised in what is now the 25th Congressional District. She is the daughter of a nurse and a police office and comes from a military family. Hill earned her Masters in Public Administration and her Bachelor’s degree in English from CSU Northridge. Hill has devoted her life to helping others. In her capacity as the Executive Director of People Assisting the Homeless (PATH), she turned a local group doing good into the largest non-profit provider of housing for the homeless in California.

Her top issues include: Addressing income inequality, Medicare for All, mental health services access, support for veterans

The Republican Incumbent: Steve Knight

Congressman Steve Knight votes with Trump almost all the time, even though Clinton beat Trump in this district by almost seven points. Knight doesn’t think Americans have a right to review Trump’s taxes to determine if he has any conflicts of interest. He’s voted to defund Planned Parenthood, voted against bilingual education, and as a State Senator, voted to allow the Confederate Flag on state property. He’s far too extreme for this district. CA-25 is a major pickup opportunity for Democrats.

Congressman Knight has consistently voted against Medicaid, yet:

  • 32% of the children in CA-25 are on Medicaid or CHIP, and
  • 14% of the adults in CA-25 are on Medicaid

Congressman Knight has consistently voted against the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps families in need provide healthy food for children and seniors, yet:

  • 16,982 households in CA-25 receive SNAP, and 22.9% of them have a senior 60 or older in the household and 67.9% of them have a child under 18

Congressman Knight voted dozens of times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, even though it has contributed to a substantial increase in the number of insured CA-25 residents:

  • Drop In Uninsured Rate Thanks to the Affordable Care Act in CA-25: 50.3%, from 14.9% to 7.4%
  • Number of CA-25 Residents Covered Under the ACA’s Medicaid Expansion: 52,700
  • Number of CA-25 Residents Covered Through the ACA’s Marketplace Under Covered California: 25,300

Congressman Knight has accepted $15,054 from the NRA.
