In the 2018 election, our volunteers made over 100,000 voter contacts in California’s 25th Congressional District. It wound up being one of the greatest successes of the blue wave, flipping a Republican-held district in a blowout.
In the vein of “expect the unexpected,” we’re going to have to do it all over again next year. In a surprise announcement, Rep. Katie Hill announced that she is resigning her seat. It’s now an open seat, and one that we intend to win.
All eyes are going to be on the fast approaching special election to fill out the remainder of the term, as it will be seen by both parties as a preview of the 2020 election. The ousted Republican, Steve Knight, is plotting a comeback and has just announced his candidacy. Remember Knight? He voted to defund Planned Parenthood, voted against bilingual education, and as a State Senator, voted to allow the Confederate Flag on state property. He also voted dozens of times to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
There’s at least one serious Democrat in the mix already too, Assemblymember Christy Smith, who flipped a Republican seat when she won her Assembly race in 2018. The stakes are high, but we’re ready.
Earlier this year, we already reached every Democratic voter in CA-25 who voted for the first time, thanking them for being counted and urging them to get involved in voter engagement work happening in their community. With your help, we’re going to double down on our efforts, expand our voter outreach, and ensure that this Southern California district stays in Democratic hands.
Your contribution to Flip the West is an investment into a field campaign reaching the voters Democrats need to win. We’ll compete in CA-25, because it’s a seat we need to defend and hold to retain the Democratic House majority in 2020 and beyond.
Thanks for all your do.
