Flip the West Lunchtime Webinar with Top National Pollster Ben Tulchin on May 27th

In the first three installments of our webinar-in-place series, we took a deep dive into our Senate prospects in Arizona, Colorado, and Montana, our top three priority states.

For the fourth installment, coming up at noon on Wednesday, May 27th, we’re taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture. What do the polls tell us about the race for the White House and Senate, and are there winning messages we should be amplifying to help Democrats get across the finish line?

So we’re excited to be joined by a very special guest: pollster Ben Tulchin. Ben is the founder and president of Tulchin Strategies, an award-winning polling firm with an impressive client roster – probably best known as the pollster for Bernie Sanders for President.

Reaching Voters in a Pandemic: Shelter-In-Place Activism Works

As many of us adapt to our shelter-in-place lives, activists need new and creative strategies to reach voters. Even as states start reopening, there will be significant resistance to the kinds of in-person voter outreach that used to be a hallmark of political campaigning.

Flip the West, an organization dedicated to harnessing grassroots power to help Democrats take back the U.S. Senate, has adapted to these times and found surprising results.

As we shifted exclusively to opportunities to volunteer at home — phone banking at home and postcarding at home — something remarkable happened: new volunteer recruitment ACCELERATED!

We did not fully anticipate how these activities could help maintain and build relationships during shelter-in-place. Our model of in-person volunteer get togethers has shifted online in beautiful ways. We’ve heard from families that are connecting through video and writing postcards together.

And of course, more volunteers means more voters reached — 1.5 million voters so far — and a third of them were reached during the pandemic. Our voter outreach strategy can now expand, and we’re taking full advantage.

With shelter-in-place, we’re finding that a lot of voters are at home, and may be receptive to a conversation. That makes our volunteer activities more rewarding for both the recipient and the volunteer.

Voting Shouldn’t Be a Life or Death Choice: What You Can Do About It

\Patricia McKnight/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Throughout American history, brave people have risked their lives to secure our right to vote. Rather, we hoped that was history. It turns out it was Tuesday.

In Wisconsin, voters waited 5 hours or more in lines, in the middle of a pandemic, to vote in an election that should have never happened when it did. Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers pleaded with the Republican-controlled legislature to postpone the vote, as was done in other states. They wouldn’t, so he did. He pleaded with the Republican-controlled State Supreme Court to let his postponement stand. They refused. He pleaded with the U.S. Supreme Court to at least make it easier to vote-by-mail and avoid disenfranchising tens of thousands of voters. They refused.

Webinar Sunday at 4pm with Arizona WINS’s Executive Director Ian Danley

As most of us shelter in place to keep our communities and our loved ones safe from the pandemic, we’ve decided to launch a series of webinars to keep you up-to-date on the work being done by Flip the West and our partners. I know the days are starting to blend together during these uncertain times, but every day is one day closer to the November election. We can’t lose sight of what’s at stake, even as we all get through this madness as best we can.

Much of Flip the West’s work in Arizona is done in consultation and in alliance with Arizona WINS, so for our first webinar, we are honored to be joined by their Executive Director Ian Danley. Arizona WINS is a coalition of organizations focused on helping achieve public policies that benefit working families and advancing an inclusive, engaged, and equitable state for all Arizonans.

We Need Vote-By-Mail in the Next COVID-19 Response Bill

There’s a lot of buzz this week about a bipartisan stimulus package working its way through Congress right now. It’s got some good and some bad in it, but suffice to say, there’s an immediate urgency for action, so it is moving quickly.

The smart play for activists who see something lacking in the current stimulus bill is to begin fighting NOW for what we want to see in the NEXT COVID-19 response bill. There will be a next bill, because the COVID-19 pandemic has not turned a corner, and no matter what fantasy world Trump lives in, we don’t “see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

For that reason, we wholeheartedly agree with an action being spearheaded by our friends at Indivisible.

Remote Volunteer Opportunities During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a “pandemic.” Across the country and around the world, restrictions are being placed on a scale that none of us have ever seen to diminish the spread of this highly contagious and serious illness. Even so, Senate Republicans stood in the way of an expansive paid sick leave amendment that would have protect most American workers.

All of that is to say that even in the midst of this crisis, it is as critical as ever for us to continue fighting to Flip the Senate.  As you might expect, most of our in-person activities have been cancelled.

Given these disruptions, we are expanding the kinds of programs that can be done from home and invite new volunteers in the fold: you can sign up here for remote phone banking and remote postcarding. We hope to have new remote texting opportunities soon and are in discussions with allies about it.

Californians: Get In Formation to Flip the Senate Blue

There are good people fighting for a better tomorrow, day in and day out, and many of them (maybe you) live in states represented by the Senators who betrayed their oath by acquitting Trump.

Our red-state Resistors are overworked and under-resourced, yet they persist. But they cannot reach all the voters we need to win this election. They need our help.

Our volunteer opportunities have ramped up, and it’s time to sign up, spread the word, and make an impact. Check out our Mobilize America page for dozens of opportunities to get involved – texting, phone banking, postcarding, canvassing, and registering voters in Arizona and Colorado.

Join Us in Arizona February 8-14 for Voter Registration and Canvassing

At Flip the West, we are doing everything we can to help Democrats take back the Senate. We believe that direct voter engagement is key - expanding the electorate - and that’s why we’re investing in voter registration and canvassing in critical states like Arizona. Together, we can defeat Republican Senator Martha McSally.

This week,  incredible Flip the West volunteers traveled to Arizona to register and engage with voters. Our local partners, including Indivisible Arizona, are grateful for the boost, and we’re making a real impact.

But there’s no rest for the Resistance, and our next Days of Action have already been scheduled. We will be registering new voters in Cottonwood and Phoenix February 8-14 in time for the March 17th Democratic presidential primary. We’re focusing on locations with a high likelihood of Democratic interest, including college campuses.

Call to Grassroots Groups Ready to Join our Flip Force

If you are part of an organization looking to plug into efforts to flip Senate seats, please consider joining our Flip Force -- our group of blue district Resistance groups ready to work with us on these races. Our first monthly meeting (via Zoom teleconference) is on Tuesday, November 19th at 5pm. If a liason from your organization is interested in joining the call, please sign up HERE. If you know other groups who might be interested, please help us spread the word and share this post.

Flip the West is focused on taking back the U.S. Senate by flipping seats in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, and Texas. We can best help these states by doing what we do best: organizing large numbers of blue district volunteers to contact voters through postcarding, texting, phonebanking, and canvassing. We have developed close working relationships with groups in these states, particularly in Arizona and Colorado, and can immediately plug volunteers into meaningful work.

Lessons and Little Known Victories from Democrats’ Banner Day

Andy Beshear Victory NightThe BLUE WAVE is back!

Yesterday was the biggest Election Day of 2019, and Democrats and progressives have a lot of reason to celebrate. It took a lot of voter mobilization from a lot of candidates and organizations, but the fruits of our labor are evident: when WE organize and THE PEOPLE vote, DEMOCRATS win.

The big headlines you probably know already:

Democrats won enough seats to secure a majority in both Virginia state houses, marking the first time in a quarter century that Democrats control the entirety of state government. And there was a huge upset in Kentucky, with Democrat Andy Beshear defeating the incumbent Republican Governor Matt Bevin, despite a last minute campaign rally from Donald Trump.

But there’s more to unravel, and we thought we’d take a deeper dive into the results, to highlight what these victories mean for people living their daily lives and to see what lessons we can glean for the blue wave in 2020. Fair warning, this is a long one.

How We Can Win

It starts with you. Together, we can restore the promise of America and start to reverse the damage done by Trump and his Republican enablers in the House and Senate. Together, we prevent a far right wing takeover of the U.S. Supreme Court. Together, we win.
